Old Fashioned Porch
Are they even really a room?

There’s something charmingly old-fashioned about a British porch isn’t there? They have all just stood outside these houses like silent sentinels, keeping watch over the lawn and the drive. And they are like Schoedinger’s room aren’t they? Simultaneously definitely a room, and yet completely not. It’s not like we aim to spend much time there.
So, when houses are about function and comfort, what on earth do we really need a porch for? These transitional cupboard-hallway-rooms are a bit of an anomaly really, no?

No! Porches are important – and here is why.

They add just a touch of security

You can’t really put a price on safety and security, can you? Porches really are an entrance to the entrance of your house. But that extra door gives your house a little more protection.

This is emphasised greatly these days. A lot of porches are fitted with little cameras, or doorbells that film people that approach the property. Porch owners have realised the security benefit they can get by sticking an extra room to the front of their house.

Where else will you store your muddy boots?

A lot of porches act as a storage solution. Especially in Winter, there is nothing better than being able to store your outdoor muddy coats and shoes outside the home, yet not completely outside the house. There’s no tracking thick wellington soles of mud into the kitchen when you have a porch.

Porches are excellent for storage whilst still being that liminal space where you can leave the remnants of the outside world before stepping into your home proper.

Have we mentioned energy efficiency yet?

Remember when you were younger, and you left the front door open? Your mother would shuffle to the front door in her fluffy slippers and holler “are we heating the street then?” Well, she might have had a point, especially in winter.

Porches, especially double-glazed porches, help keep the house warm. Less heat escapes the house, and that cuts down on energy bills. It doesn’t mean that you can leave your front door open, though.

The porch is making a stylish comeback

The porch is experiencing a bit of a resurgence at the moment. There are a lot more popping up, and each one of them is a monument to the personal style and taste of the homeowner. There are hanging baskets, potted plants, and even net curtains in some of the grander specimens.

The British porch is becoming a staple of style for houses. These mini-extensions are designed to be aesthetically pleasing. By adopting the style of the house, they complete the home.

But why is all this important?

You still might be sitting there in your living room wondering what the point of a porch is. Well, all the reasons lead to one important fact. A porch that’s secure, energy efficient, provides storage, and looks great increases the value of your home.

OK, you might not be ready to sell your home yet, but at some point, you might wish to downsize, emigrate, or leave your home to your children. If this is the case, having a valuable property is preferable.

The porch isn’t going to elevate your house price to that of a Dorset mansion, but it will add enough value to make a significant difference.
