Look after your conservatory roof in Autumn
Posted on 12th September 2024 at 13:01
You have spent the last few months enjoying late evenings in your conservatory. And why not? There have been clear skies, warm rains, and the occasional lightning show. Now Mother Nature is getting ready to pack her bright blues, her greens, and her warm winds away for a few months. You might spend less time in your conservatory until Spring comes around. But that doesn’t mean you should forget about it.
Your conservatory is still part of your house, and with it, your roof is the main thing that keeps it from flooding or leaves falling over your new rug. So, how are you going to make sure that when Spring marches back, you’ll just be able to snuggle back down in your conservatory?
Inspect your roof panels
Your conservatory should be stable and secure. A lot of this is to do with the roof panels that keep you dry and allow you to stargaze on those cooler nights. They might look pretty and sturdy from your view on your chaise longue, but unless you check them how do you really know?
• Check for damage: From birds dropping sticks, to winds blowing debris all over them, conservatory roofs can get chipped and cracked. Have a look and make sure that this hasn’t happened.
• Sealant check: Water ingress can cause a plethora of problems for you conservatory too. Go around and check. Make sure your sealant seals are sealed.
• Clean the roof: It is much easier to check for problems if you can get two season’s worth of dirt off the roof.
Clear gutters and drains
The thing about Autumn, is that it likes to moult. Trees are shedding leaves everywhere, and debris just seems to find its way into every nook and cranny. Before the rains come and the frozen climate ices your blockages, it is time to clear the gutters and drains.
• Remove debris: Luckily it’s usually easy to see the debris blocking your pipes, gutters, and drains. Leaves are quite easy to find, and often they become mulch. Remove this and it will help protect your conservatory roof.
• Check for damage: The last thing you need is a cracked pipe spilling water all over the roof. Water damage can be costly to fix, and though you may have already checked your seals, an onslaught of grotty Autumn water won’t do your roof any good.
Treat for mould and mildew
You might not immediately notice it. It might take a few minutes looking around to spot the tell-tale signs of mould and damp. But if it’s there, Autumn isn’t going to scare it away. It will likely provide the mildew with the right conditions for it flourish all over your conservatory.
• Inspect for signs: Be thorough in your check. It might even be a good idea to get someone in to have a proper look, but if you know what you are looking for, then make sure you do a proper job of it.
• Cleaning: It’s a good idea to clean your conservatory roof anyway. Whilst you might not have picked anything up in your thorough preliminary investigation, treating for it won’t harm your roof. You might as well be sure.
You don’t have to leave though
Whilst the skies might be less interesting to look at, the evenings cold and dank, and the horizon slowly become bare and barren, it doesn’t mean you need to abandon your conservatory. These are perennial rooms that add to the house, not just to your summer. Find some other ways to spend time in there. Whilst you’re there though, use these tips to keep your conservatory roof well maintained.
